AirPods vs Bose SoundSport Free – Grudge Match!
Hey everyone, thanks for stopping by another Full Affect Fitness article! Today we will be comparing and contrasting two popular earbuds through a grudge match, AirPods vs Bose SoundSport Free!
I will be focusing on 3 main topics within this article, listed below:
- Excelling Areas For Each Product
- Product Function
- Best Value
Let’s kick this article off by discussing which product is best for certain types of activities!
Areas of Expertise:
The AirPods:
The AirPods come in a very sleek package with a small case and low profile design. What you get with these is an easily usable headphone that is great for on the go travel. With the AirPods having a significant battery life of around 8 hours off a single charge and a rough total of 24 hours or more of a charge with a fully charged case and earbuds. They can also charge to roughly 3 hours of usage in 15 minutes.
The ample battery life when fully charged, and quick charge aspects of this product are perfect for busy individuals who use their earbuds lot’s throughout the day and don’t always have a significant amount of time to charge them.
The AirPods have decent sound quality with a fair bit of volume, so for the day to day user who doesn’t need to get amped up in the gym, the audio of this product will suffice. However, for those looking for a little more kick, that is where we will turn to the Bose SoundSport Free Earbuds!
Bose SoundSport Frees:
The Bose SoundSport frees are similar to the AirPods in the sense of them being a truly wireless earbud. However, they come in a more rugged package. This in the form of a larger and more “obsolete” case with the earbuds themselves being larger width-wise and heavier.
So while this means that the product may not be as ideal for everyday use when compared to the AirPods, it doesn’t mean this discredits the benefits of the SoundSport Frees.
The larger package of the product comes with its benefits. Not only do they play far louder than the AirPods, but they also feature a much more crisp base. This means that the Bose SoundSport Frees provide far better audio quality for training. I have found this sound to stay much more consistent than the AirPods due to the wing tips staying unblocked from earwax.
The only downfall is you do not receive as good of battery life with these headphones compared to the AirPods. With about 4-5 hours on the earbuds themselves and roughly 15 hours combined with a full charge on the earbuds and case.
The wingtips that add to the size of the product also provide a much more secure fit when moving around during training, making them ideal for staying in place during exercise. All of this shows us that the larger design of the Bose SoundSport Frees is much less sleek, however, it provides a much larger benefit when it comes to the audio.
The Decision:
All in all, the AirPods excel in everyday use, where I would give them a 10/10 for this area of expertise. Meanwhile, the Bose SoundSport Frees excel in use for training, where I would give them a 9/10.
Product Function:
AirPods:
While I do believe the AirPods would connect and work well with any mobile device, they have a unique benefit for connecting to Apple products installed with iOS 10 or later. This makes it extremely seamless to connect. Simply open them up and connect upon first use, and just put them in your ear for future uses.
This makes the connection process quick and efficient. I have never experienced a single problem when trying to connect my AirPods to my iPhone. This is great as we all know how frustrating it is when our earbuds don’t connect. Do you have any experiences like this?
Once the AirPods have been connected, the performance/functions of the product shift to the audio, which we discussed above.
Bose SoundSport Frees:
When trying to connect my Bose SoundSport frees to my iPhone, it took slightly longer. However, when this was figured out, taking them out of the case to connect was a breeze. This because they would auto-connect where I would then proceed to play my music.
I experienced very few, if any issues with connecting my Bose SoundSport Frees to my iPhone. The only difference is the slightly more difficult initial connection.
Like the AirPods, we have discussed audio performance in the previous section.
Best Value Product:
Now that we have discussed some pros and cons with each product and talked about which product is best for certain activities, it is time to see what product brings the best value for the price!
AirPods:
In the case of the AirPods, the price comes in at $220.00 Canadian. This is a fair amount of money. However, considering the sleek engineering of the product, low profile yet solid performance and knowing you will be receiving a quality product when purchasing from a company like Apple, this price becomes more justifiable.
So if you’re someone looking for an everyday pair of earbuds, and doesn’t need to have the most optimal pair of earbuds for training, I would certainly consider checking out the AirPods!
Bose SoundSport Frees:
The Bose SoundSport frees come in at a slightly higher price tag of $250.00 dollars. While this may not make a lot of sense considering how great the AirPods are, there are reasons why this price is justifiable.
The primary reason is the greater audio performance. If you are purchasing a pair of earbuds mainly to be used at the gym, this extra money certainly has the potential to be worth it for you! In addition to that, Bose is known for their earbuds, and I would argue, while both good, that the Bose earbuds would have the advantage over the AirPods when it comes to quality.
Lastly, if you like the look of one product over the other, that may be your deciding factor right their, haha!
All in all, if someone is looking for a pair of truly wireless earbuds to get focused for a training session, and a pair of earbuds that are designed for training, I would 100% recommend the Bose SoundSport Frees.
Wrapping Up:
All in all, both of these products are clearly great purchases. The primary factor for you to look at is what you will be using them for. Are you going to primarily be using them for everyday living, or for training sessions?

Hey thanks for yet again another good post! I like this one a lot because I need earbuds for Christmas, so this is something I might drop hints on with my wife. I’m actually shocked that the AirPods are cheaper. I just was not expecting that at all. I know they are primarily for Apple Phones. I do not have an Apple phone. I was wondering, which one do you think would work better with an Android phone?
Hi Jessie, I agree, this would be a great Christmas gift! As per your question, I believe both the Airpods and Bose SoundSport Frees would connect equally as well.
Have a great Holiday Season Jessie!
Since we are looking at the one that will work better for exercises and all in the gym, I believe the Bose would prove much better in action than airpod. Even in my normal use of the airpods, they do at times fall of my ear but the Bose seems to be more tighter and could be more fixed to the ear. Well! I feel it should be based on individual demands but then, I won’t be too thrilled to make use of airpods for my trainings but prefer the Bose soundsport
Hi Rodarrick, I certainly agree, the Bose SoundSport Free Earbuds would be the better pick of the two for most people in regards to training.
Hey Kohl,
Great review, the Bose SoundSport Free sound like they may be ideal for me!
I’m a little bit clumsy and my stuff tends to get “knocked around” a fair bit, so a more robust case and earbuds are ideal for me.
My gym is also extremely noisy (I go to one where people, myself included at times) shout as they’re lifting weights. When I’m on the squat rack it’s about the base, so sounds like a winner to me!
For me the battery isn’t a massive issue either, I work out about 5 times a week and would only use them for the gym, so charging once a week, would be perfect!
Hi Nate, we all know the grunting that inevitably occurs when getting after some squats! Haha!
I agree, the Bose SoundSport Free Earbuds sound like they would be perfect for you!
If you purchase them, I am confident you would love them!
Have a great day Nate and thanks for checking out the review!
I love the look and feel of an airpod when going around in the house and I must admit it is really nice going about with it. But when it comes to my work out session in the gym, i will always go for the Bose because it gits perfectly and you do not have to worry about it falling off when you get a little nodge from someone in the gym. It’s nice of you to make these comparison
Hi Benson, those are my thoughts as well regarding these products!
